Caring for your cutie’s feet – takes a village

As your child grows taller, bigger and of course cuter, you scrapbook all the milestones with pride. Though as a mom, you are constantly wondering if all your little one’s body parts are growing as they should. Maintaining, caring and recording your child’s foot growth is just as important as weight and height growth for their health, mobility and well-being.

Your newborn’s foot is composed mainly of soft flexible cartilage which converts to 26 soft bones by approximately 4 years of age. These bones are usually fully hardened by age 16. During these years of foot development the foot can be at risk of injury and deformity due to ill-fitting footwear. Remember the nursery rhyme, “the foot bones are connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone is connected to the hip bone”. Your newborn’s foot is the foundation of their body posture and walking style.

It is important to allow your child to go barefoot regularly to help them develop balance, coordination and posture. Proper fitting shoes should be introduced when your child’s primary focus is cruising furniture and will aid in balance, stability and encourage heel to toe walking. A proper fitting shoe is firm and comfortable in both length and width, has a rounded toe, plenty of room for the toes, flexible, flat sole, light weight and made from a breathable material. The shape of the shoe should match the shape of the child’s foot and the heel counter should be snug.

As I was having my two children Nicole, 6, and Matthew, 3, I was frustrated with the availability, quality and customer service of stores selling proper fitting children shoes. At the same time I wondered, now that we have built a family how do I not lose sense of self within motherhood. If I’ve learnt one thing about being a mom, ALL the family members must be happy to make the entire family strong. These thoughts sparked the creation of my company, Kinder Soles.

Kinder Soles is a family owned and operated children shoe store that incorporates child foot care along with proper fitting shoes. Our mission is to deliver superior customer service, while providing quality, practical footwear in a family-friendly environment and through strong community involvement. Kinder Soles staff, Barbara and myself (both Moms’), have been properly trained in fitting children’s footwear and strive to ensure each customer has an enjoyable experience at every visit.

Kinder Soles is like my third child and I would like to thank all the life with kids moms, my family and friends for their continued support. They say it takes a village to raise a child and I feel truly blessed to be part of your village.
